Facebook campaigners compete to make Iron Maiden/Motörhead/total silence the Christmas No 1
Last year the Facebook campaign to get Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name to the Christmas No 1 spot mobilised thousands to take the song's key line "Fuck you/I won't do what you tell me!" as a statement of intent against Simon Cowell Incorporated. Jon and Tracy Morter got 950,000 Facebookers to crash Joe McElderry 's pole-position party. The event was seen as an act of musical defiance, smashing a corporate machine. For about two seconds it felt punk and nostalgic, bringing a whiff of unpredictability to the charts. It also felt like a mini-wonder that a Facebook campaign had instigated change in the non-virtual world. Then a secondary wave of emotions hit: beating Joe McElderry felt a bit like tricking a puppy into falling over. Also, did anyone still care about Christmas No 1? Then there was the M Night Shyamalan-like plot twist: RATM were signed to Cowell's label Sony, suggesting it was all a complicated ruse to ingratiate us into the idea of the Early 90s Politicised Alternative Week on X Factor 2010 (Tesco Mary does Bikini Kill's Suck My Left One). Nevertheless, the idea has stuck and several new Christmas No 1 Facebook campaigns have already begun … CAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE Attempt to get John Cage's avant garde 4'33" slice of silence to No 1. Odds Short. Support from XFM to the Sun. 46,000 supporters on Facebook. Ticks the "stunt" box, although we can't imagine Reggie Yates blasting this after the latest Taio Cruz belter. If it was an X Factor contestant it'd be Aiden Grimshaw IRON MAIDEN FOR XMAS NUMBER 1 The Maiden's These Colours Don't Run has been put forward to hit the Crimbo top spot with money going towards Help For Heroes. Odds Long. They need to wheel out Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter and rouse those memories of non-ironic mullets and leather trousers out of storage, if they want a chance of winning. If it was an X Factor contestant it'd be Storm Lee GET MOTORHEAD – THE ACE OF SPADES TO CHRISTMAS NO 1 IN DECEMBER 2010 Air guitar perennial re-released for Cancer Research. Odds Middling. The public are getting reacquainted with the track thanks to that Kronenbourg advert, but it's hard to see how else this will catch on. If it was an X Factor contestant it'd be Treyc "I still in the room, you know" Cohen THE WOMBLES FOR UK CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONE! Wombling Merry Christmas wants to take the top spot. Odds Long. Not very subversive; Wombles creator Mike Batt is responsible for Katie Melua. Also, we demand a shockingly inappropriate hip-hop makeover for Great Uncle Bulgaria and pals before we take this seriously ... If it was an X Factor contestant it'd be Wagner BIRD IS THE WORD FOR UK CHRISTMAS NUMBER 1 2010 TO BEAT X-FACTOR Tremolo surf guitar makes waves towards top spot. Odds The favourite. You may recognise 1963 Trashmen hit Surfin' Bird from that Birds Eye garlic chicken advert with the loathsome family, the Family Guy episode from a couple years ago or the film Full Metal Jacket. Anyway ... come back The Climb; all is forgiven! If it was an X Factor contestant it'd be Cher Lloyd
