Guardian Activate Summit heads to New York
The Guardian's Activate Summit is to make its overseas debut next month, with a New York conference featuring Arianna Huffington, Craig Newmark and Jeff Jarvis. Activate New York will bring together leading thinkers from around the world to debate how technology can – or cannot – affect social change on a global scale. Speakers include: Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the pioneering One Laptop Per Child association; Evgeny Morozov, author of The Net Delusion; Iqbal Quadir, founder of Grameenphone; Danah Boyd, a social media researcher at Microsoft Research; and many others. Huffington, co-founder of the Huffington Post, said: "I love the theme of the summit because for me what we do is ultimately about impact and there can be no impact without people being activated. The theme of every session here is about giving people information that activates them." Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of Guardian News & Media, which publishes MediaGuardian.co.uk, said: "Technology is reshaping almost every aspect of our lives, providing us with near limitless opportunities, combined with countless challenges. "It is for this generation to imagine the future of information and take the first steps on the road to recrafting the ways in which it is created and spread. I hope Activate New York will inspire that path." The one-day summit, which will be held on Thursday 28 April at New York's Paley Centre for Media, is to be sponsored by the United Nations Foundation, the Vodafone Foundation and Omidyar Network.
