Europa League: Fulham v Hamburg semi-final, second leg
A relaxed Fulham fan catches up on the day's news ahead of the big match. It's Fulham's 15th game in Europe this season and the tie is up for grabs after the first leg finished 0-0 Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk The Hamburg fans make the most of their first visit to west London and take photos of the houses and environment around Craven Cottage Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk The ground is small and quaint compared to the HSH Nordbank Arena. Craven Cottage, which has been Fulham's home since 1896, has a capacity of just under 26,000 and wooden seats – whereas Hamburg's home ground is less than 10 years old and has hosted World Cup games, as well as being the venue for this year's Europa League final Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Ruud Van Nistelrooy waves to the travelling fans as he comes out to warm up Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Having been passed fit, Bobby Zamora warms up ahead of the game. It is good news for Fulham fans as the forward has been the Cottagers' best player during their superb season, bagging 19 goals with eight of them coming in Europe Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk The hopes and dreams of the Craven Cottage crowd looks to be weighing heavily on the shoulders of Roy Hodgson as he surveys the scene before kick-off Photograph: Tom Jenkins Hamburg's coach Ricardo Moniz is looking a bit pensive too, but that's not a suprise as it's his first match in sole managerial control following the sacking of Bruno Labbadia – but what a match to make your debut in Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk For once Hugh Grant isn't receiving the applause but giving it Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Just two minutes into the match and Fulham give the visiters a glimpse of their intentions. Zamora collects a ball from Gera then sidesteps his marker before shooting straight at Rost in the Hamburg goal. You can't help but think a fully fit Zamora would have done better with a chance like that, a fact reinforced by the sight of the Fulham striker moving rather gingerly afterwards Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Van Nistelrooy out-jumps Danny Murphy Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Half way through the first half Danny Murphy trips up Ze Roberto and the referee gives a free kick to Hamburg 26 yards out and in the middle of the goal. It'll have to be something special to beat Schwarzer from there ... Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: Tom Jenkins/guardian.co.uk ... and by golly it is! Petric steps up and sends a fabulous strike over the wall before dipping violently into the top corner giving the Fulham keeper no chance. Not only have the visitors taken the lead, they have got a vital away goal which means Fulham need to score at least twice to reach the final Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk A battle royale in midfield between Murphy and David Jarolim Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Jarolim gets involved in another tussle. This time he comes out second best as Zoltan Gera climbs above him to win the ball Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk It's standing room only at a packed Craven Cottage ... well it would be if you were allowed to stand at a football game any more Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk A rampaging Gera beats Clint Mathijsen to the ball in order to get a cross in Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Not to be outdone by the quality of Petric's strike, mid-way through the second half Simon Davies demonstrates a different but equally exquisite piece of skill when he scores the equaliser. Murphy delicately clips the ball over the top and Davies shows the deftest of touches to the ball under control before he lifts it over Demel and sweeps it into the net from 12 yards. A goal that Dennis Bergkamp himself would have been proud of scoring Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Then seven minutes later, a Fulham corner swings in towards Etuhu who only manages to get a slight touch on it but the ball falls to Gera who spins past his marker and jabs the ball past Rost and into the net ... Photograph: Tom Jenkins/Tom Jenkins Photograph: Tom Jenkins/guardian.co.uk ... and then Craven Cottage erupts as Gera is mobbed by his team-mates Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk It's no wonder Petric, Van Nistelrooy and Ze Roberto look so dejected, after going from 1-0 up to 2-1 down in less than 10 minutes Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk The final whistle goes and Fulham have done it, they're through to the final and the little stadium next to the Thames is awash with emotion Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk
