Nirvana, Madness, Fatboy Slim sleeve stars: where are they now?

Stefan Gates has a claim to fame that he shares with a woman who covered herself in whipped cream, dozens of babies and several siamese twins: he's appeared nude on a classic album cover. In Stefan's case it was the sleeve to Led Zep's 1973 Houses Of The Holy, which features him aged four, and his sister Samantha, naked and climbing up the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. On Radio 4's Stefan Gates' Cover Story , Gates reveals how the image haunted him, that he's never heard the album, and what happened next. Which got us thinking: what happened to some of the other classic album subjects once the photographer walked away … Nirvana: Nevermind Having taught him to swim with the incentive of a dollar bill dangled in front, the parents of the Nevermind baby were required to bribe their son to do absolutely everything – from going to the toilet to eating his tea. Now, aged 18, he'll only drive his car if there's $100 taped to the other side of the windscreen. Madness: One Step Beyond Twenty-five years later, persistent back problems which continue to nag millions of ska fans were attributed to schoolyard impersonations of the Camden combo (and the wearing of unfeasibly baggy trousers). The case gave rise to the memorable ad campaign beginning, "If you've been injured at work or while impersonating Chas Smash … " Sigur Rós: Með Suð I Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust These dashing naturists were followed at jerky high speed by 16 women in bikinis, one of whom paused to wink at an angry overweight man in a gravy-stained vest brandishing a rolled-up Beano, a short bald man, and a round-faced bespectacled man with his tongue out. Fatboy Slim: You've Come A Long Way, Baby Wearing his "I'm #1 so why try harder" T-shirt, Fatboy Slim's cover model was feeling on top of the world here until a familiar voice from the pavement behind blew his cunning disguise: "Row-land! Row-land!" Just when he thought he'd escaped Grange Hill, he was pulled right back … The Eagles: Hotel California The hotel was taken over by Premier Inn. The move led to an unlikely concept album by the Eagles focusing on the inability of staff to provide them with some Pepsi Max, a product not stocked in their vending machines since 2009. The White Stripes: Elephant After seven years of waiting with his cricket bat at the ready, Jack White finally got his chance to captain England on the forthcoming tour of Bangladesh. However, pundits were astounded when he insisted on drafting in vice-captain Brendan Benson and that tall guy with the glasses as wicketkeeper.
