British couple found dead in Tenerife

A British couple have been found dead at their home in Tenerife, according to Spanish police. The badly decomposed bodies of James Mutch, 57, and Beatrice Sallens, 69, were discovered in a flat in Playa de las Americas, a popular resort with Britons. Police were reportedly alerted after neighbours noticed a smell coming from the property. Officers found the bodies of the couple, who are understood to be originally from Glasgow, yesterday morning. Reports suggested the pair could have been dead for five or more days. The local newspaper Island Connections reported that the couple were found in separate bedrooms . It said neighbours reported that "a substantial amount of blood" was visible at the scene. "It is thought the man, who reportedly suffered from a serious illness, died after falling and striking his head against a table in the sitting room," the newspaper said. Detectives were investigating and postmortem examinations were being carried out, a police spokesman said. He said he believed the couple lived in the resort rather than being on holiday there. No arrests have been made. A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said next of kin had been informed and consular assistance was being provided.
