Gordon Smith to resign as chief executive of the SFA

Gordon Smith's resignation from the post of chief executive of the Scottish Football Association is to be confirmed this evening. A statement from Scottish football's governing body is imminent, with personal reasons to be cited as the reason behind Smith's unexpected departure. Smith, a former player with Kilmarnock, Rangers and Brighton & Hove Albion, joined the SFA in 2007. He has endured an often turbulent reign, including the disastrous tenure of George Burley as the Scotland manager. Most recently Smith was heavily criticised for personally seeking the punishment of a Livingston player, Robbie Winters, for alleged simulation during a match the chief executive attended.
