Jamie Carragher backs stumbling Liverpool to claim fourth place
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool can still finish in the top four despite slipping to sixth place in the Premier League following their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United yesterday. The loss at Old Trafford was Liverpool's 10th of the season and now means they are four points behind Tottenham in fourth place having played a game more than the London club. Manchester City are in fifth, two points ahead of Liverpool with two games in hand. But Carragher believes there will be more twists and turns in the battle for the final Champions League place and remains confident his side still have enough time to win the race. "We have just got to recover from this as quickly as possible and get on a run of victories," he said. "We were playing against a top side yesterday and have run them close. It's really disappointing to lose, as there wasn't much between the sides in the game. "You didn't see too many chances being created but we have lost and you have got to move on, as this was the most difficult fixture we had before the season ends." Spurs still have to play Chelsea, United, Arsenal and Manchester City before the end of the season, while City meet United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa. On the face of it, the only tricky fixture that remains in Liverpool's path is the visit of Chelsea on 1 May. "Of course we believe we can still close the gap," added Carragher. "They [Spurs and City] will both have difficult spells and we have got to make sure we take maximum points when they do. "Maybe there will be more criticism of us now and at a club like Liverpool, the pressure is never off. Things are a bit more difficult but we have still got lots of points to play for."
