This week's new films

The Kids Are All Right (15) (Lisa Cholodenko, 2010, US) Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson. 106 mins Double lesbian motherhood proves to be no less messed up a family set up than any other here, although it does give two great actresses meaty roles, and open up a fresh set of complications when their teenage children track down their biological father (Ruffalo). Sexual politics play a distant second to character dramedy here, and even if it gets mushy, it's a funny, observant study of real, flawed people. Burke & Hare (15) (John Landis, 2010, UK) Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Isla Fisher. 91 mins The well-filmed tale of Irish bodysnatchers in Edinburgh gets a Laurel and Hardyish treatment courtesy of Pegg and Serkis, with a dash of romantic comedy and plenty of celebrity cameos amid the irreverent corpse-mongering. Involuntary (15) (Ruben Östlund, 2008, Swe) Villmar Björkman, Linnea Cart-Lamy, Leif Edlund. 102 mins Overtones of Östlund's compatriot Roy Andersson in this penetrating, unforgiving survey of his country's modern morals and mores. The artfully framed action switches between five incidents ranging from teen girls' webcam provocation to overzealous male bonding. Saw 3D (18) (Kevin Greutert, 2010, US) Cary Elwes, Betsy Russell. 90 mins The 3D treatment brings you even closer to the sadist's Great Egg Race that the Saw franchise has become, and will no doubt lure in the crowd who've enabled it to get up to part seven. The rest of us stopped counting, and watching, long ago. The Hunter (15) (Rafi Pitts, 2010, Iran/Ger) Rafi Pitts, Mitra Hajjar, Mansour Dowlatmand. 92 mins Sparse Iranian tale of a family man who takes vengeance on the police, then flees to the forest for semi-abstract cat and mouse games. It's too subtle and slow to qualify as a thriller, but unorthodox and locally distinctive. Spiderhole (18) (Daniel Simpson, 2009, UK) Amy Noble, Emma Griffiths Malin, George Maguire. 82 mins London art students discover there's no such thing as a free room, and definitely no squatters' rights in this gory horror, when they break into a swanky ruin only to discover it's already occupied by the worst sort of tenant. Out Of The Ashes (NC) (Tim Albone, Lucy Martens, 2010, UK) 85 mins Documentary following the efforts of Afghanistan's newly formed national cricket team to qualify for the 2011 world cup. This Prison Where I Live (NC) (Rex Bloomstein, 2010, UK/Ger) 90 mins Documentary on East German comedian Michael Mittermeier and his Burmese counterpart, Zarganar, imprisoned for his art. It Happened One Night , Forbidden (U/NC) (Frank Capra, 1934/1932) Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert, Barbara Stanwyck, Adolphe Menjou. 105 mins/85 mins Two favourites from Capra's pre-cheese years: a rarely bettered, opposites-attract screwball road comedy; and melodrama Forbidden, in which Stanwyck falls for a married politician. Out next week Another Year Mike Leigh ruminates on a middle-aged couple and their unhappy single friends. Jackass 3D Johnny Knoxville and co proceed undaunted with their merry prankster masochism. Due Date Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis buddy up for a comedy road trip. Fit Modern Brit sexual politics explored through a youth dance group. Let Me In Decent American translation of Swedish vampire hit Let The Right One In. Mammoth Gael García Bernal leads Lukas Moodysson's drama of global relative values. Red & White Epic account of Indonesia's struggle for independence. Golmaal 3 Zany Bollywood comedy, led by Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor. Out next week In two weeks... Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver face off in You Again … Cannibals keep it in the family in We Are What We Are … In three weeks ... Half of the final term in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part I … Thai Cannes-winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives … In a month ... George Clooney is The American hitman … Danny Trejo in Grindhouse flick Machete
