Guardian Review Book Club with Colm Tóibín

Date: Thursday 26 August Time: 7.00pm Venue: The Scott Room, The Guardian, Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU Price: £9.50/£7.50 for Guardian &xtra members Eilis Lacey lives in Enniscorthy, southern Ireland, with her mother and her sister, Rose. Her father has died, and her brothers have gone to England to find work. It is the 1950s, and for Eilis and many other young women there are very few prospects of marriage and work. When Rose arranges for her to emigrate to New York, Eilis knows that she must go, and embarks on a difficult journey to begin a new life in Brooklyn. At first homesick and lonely, she eventually settles into the routines of life at a boarding house and work at a large department store, and even finds romance with Tony, a young Italian American. But when tragic news brings her back to Ireland she is caught between the comforting familiarity of the old world and the allure of her new life, and faces a devastating choice between duty and love.
