Success for paper's 'sacks appeal'

A campaign by the Kentish Gazette has forced Canterbury city council to back down over changes to its recycling service. On 3 February, the 13,000-circulation weekly splashed on the council's decision to cut back on the delivery to residents of free recycling sacks and launched a "sacks appeal". The paper was inundated with readers' letters, emails, tweets and Facebook comments. The result? A climbdown by the council , which has decided not to introduce the proposed system. Leo Whitlock , editor of the paper published by the KM Group , said: "Some journalists might scoff at this sort of story but it was an issue that really mattered to our readers."
