Mencap call to keep disability transport benefit

Mencap is calling for the government to scrap its plans to cut a benefit used by 58,000 disabled people to pay for transport, which it says flies in the face of coalition assurances that there would be "choice and control" for vulnerable people. The cut to disability living allowance, announced in the comprehensive spending review, will make disabled people in residential homes worse off to the tune of £33 a week on average, the charity said. "This money helps them get the personal support they need to get out and take part in activities," said Mark Goldring, Mencaps's chief executive.
