Jodie Williams reaches 200m final at world junior championships

Britain's Jodie Williams moved effortlessly into the final of the women's 200 metres at the IAAF world junior championships with victory in her semi-final heat last night in Moncton, Canada. The 16-year-old had already triumphed in the 100m on Wednesday and showed no ill effects from her exploits as she won her heat in 23.20sec to reach today's final. "I'm absolutely shattered and I'm going straight to bed when I get in and I'll sleep all day tomorrow," said Williams, who extended her remarkable unbeaten record to 151 races going back five years. "I was coming round the bend and they were pushing me but I just needed to get there for myself to have the confidence going into the final, but I definitely had to push." Emily Diamond also progressed to the final as she finished second in heat three in 23.47. The night session delivered more British success as Laura Samuel and Andrew Sutcliffe added silver and bronze to the team's medal tally with success in the triple jump and pole vault respectively. Having fouled in the first round, Samuel's third-round effort of 13.57m was enough to make the cut before she broke her own UK junior record with a 13.75m effort in round four to secure silver. "Coming in I was ranked fifth so I was targeting that bronze medal and I've got the silver now, so I'm really happy," she said. "It feels absolutely amazing, I'm on top of the world. As soon as I knew I had it I got my flag out and started celebrating." Sutcliffe earned third position in the men's pole vault with an outdoor lifetime best performance of 5.35m. "It's still not sunk in yet," Sutcliffe said. "I wasn't expecting to get a medal, well, I knew I was capable of it, but I wasn't sure I could do it." Elsewhere, Sarah Kelly came seventh in the women's 800m final while Matt Devereux went out of the pole vault final after three failures at 5.10m.
