Wimbledon 2010: Women's singles final
It's a beautiful day down in SW19 where the reigning champion and number 1 seed Serena Williams takes on number 21 seed Vera Zvonareva. This is Serena's sixth Wimbledon singles final and she is attempting to win her fourth title whereas Zvonareva hasn't made it past the fourth round before Photograph: Julian Finney/Getty Images There's near-riotous cheering in the second game of the first set when underdog Vera Zvonareva wins her first point of the match. It gets a bit better than that as she breaks Serena's serve to win the second game Photograph: Geoff Caddick/EPA Williams fights back and breaks Zvonareva's serve to make it 2-1 Photograph: Alastair Grant/AP Photograph: Alastair Grant/guardian.co.uk The Russian is still hanging in there, some big service points, some nice returns and some faults by Serena means that halfway through the first set it's three games all.. She's winning 95% of the points behind her first serve which is going in 66% of the time Photograph: Alastair Grant/AP It's a packed house on the Centre Court Photograph: Getty Images She's flying all over the court and despite losing the third game of the set, she's in total control of the match Photograph: Alastair Grant/AP ...powering forehand shots around the court as well as flying around it Photograph: Reuters Zvonareva has put in a reasonable performance but it has turned out to be quite a one sided final because of the fact that Serena is so far ahead of her rivals Photograph: Geoff Caddick/EPA Serena has got the scent of victory in her nostrils and whips out a 122mph ace and a couple of smashes before a final smash gives her game, set and match. She's won her fourth Wimbledon singles title, it's actually the first she's won by beating someone other than her sister Venus in the final Photograph: Julian Finney/Getty Images Given her celebrations, you'd be forgiven for thinkin it was her first title victory rather than her fourth Photograph: STEFAN WERMUTH/Reuters Joy at retaining her title Photograph: Geoff Caddick/EPA The sound of applause rings round Centre Court as the players leave the court. Vera Zvonareva will be disappointed to be leaving with the runners up plate but she didn't disgrace herself out there. It's that Serena, who is gazing adoringly at the Venus Rosewater Dish, is so much better than all her rivals at the moment it was hard to see any other outcome to today's match Photograph: Matthew Stockman/Getty Images
