Catalans Dragons lose battle to appoint Wakefield's John Kear as coach

Catalans Dragons have failed in their attempt to lure John Kear from Wakefield Trinity to become their new coach. Kear, one of the most experienced and respected British coaches in the game, was the French club's first choice to succeed Kevin Walters when he returns to Australia at the end of the season. However the Catalans were not prepared to buy out the remaining 18 months of Kear's contract with Wakefield, and are now expected to turn instead to Trent Robinson, a former Toulouse forward who is working with the Sydney Roosters. Wakefield will confirm tomorrow that Kear has agreed to stay on, which is a major boost in the club's battle to preserve their Super League place when the next batch of three-year licences are awarded next year.
