Giving the Irish too much information

One of the irritating tasks for sub-editors working on the Irish editions of London-based newspapers is inserting "local" material. This can lead to clumsy, and sometimes amusing, amendments. Today's example: the News of the World's story about a supposed romance between Peter Andre and Elen Rivas pointed out that her former partner is the Chelsea footballer Frank Lampard . In the British edition , the sentence read: "He [Andre] has met Elen's daughters Luna and Isla, also five and three, with footballer Frank Lampard." But the Irish sub-editor felt it necessary to tell readers more about Lampard, so it read: "He has met Elen's daughters Luna and Isla, also five and three, with footballer Frank Lampard - now dating Newtownards, Co Down, TV babe Christine Bleakley, 33." A little too much information in one sentence. And it's the first time I've seen Ms Bleakley referred to as a "TV babe."
