Drive-By Truckers: Go-Go Boots – review

Given that half of Georgia-based six-piece Drive-By Truckers grew up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, it's perhaps little surprise that the influence of Aretha and Otis occasionally informs their country/southern rock fusion. Sure enough, their ninth studio album is a more introspective affair than last year's rockier The Big To-Do , with a smattering of 60s soul-inspired flourishes. They're best, though, on the beautifully observed vignettes of small-town southern life, particularly "Used to Be a Cop", which, underpinned by a disco beat, tells the true story of a disgraced former police officer turned stalker.
