Ryan Moore gives up Brighton ride and stays on the sidelines

Ryan Moore's booking to ride at Brighton tomorrow turned out to be another false dawn in the protracted saga of his return from a wrist injury. The champion jockey has given up his sole mount on the card, as well as two more that he was briefly scheduled to take at Ffos Las on Thursday. "His injury's obviously worse than he thought," said his father, Gary, who trains near Brighton. "It's a day-by-day thing at the moment. I think he's aiming at a weekend return, all being well." Moore sustained severe bruising to his wrist in a fall at Windsor more than a fortnight ago, but had initially expected to be back in time for last week's Ebor meeting at York. His new target is likely to be Goodwood's Celebration Mile on Saturday, in which Main Aim is an intended runner. Trained by Moore's principal employer, Sir Michael Stoute, Main Aim has been ridden by the champion in all but one of his 17 races. But Teddy Grimthorpe, a spokesman for the horse's owner, Khalid Abdulla, said no pressure would be applied to Moore to get himself fit for Saturday's Group Two contest. "The one thing about wrist injuries, I know from my own experience, is that if you mess around with them, or return to race-riding too soon in Ryan's case, you can end up with arthritis forever," Grimthorpe said. "We want Ryan for more than just this week, so he has to look after himself." Moore has been replaced by Kieren Fallon on Profondo Rosso tomorrow and by Richard Hughes at Ffos Las on Thursday.
