Cheap TV deals with an eye on World Cup glory

The World Cup is expected to generate a surge in sales of LCD and plasma screen TVs over the next few weeks. A Sainsbury's spokesperson says they expect to see a rise in TV sales of 220% in the month running up to, and during the first two weeks of, the competition, compared to a similar period in a non-World Cup year. While not everyone will be keen to watch the football, most people are eager for a bargain, and with retailers chomping at the bit for your custom in this peak selling season prices are competitive. Combined with the threat of a rise in VAT now could be a great time to buy your box. We have looked at prices for two top-selling HD TVs: the Sony Bravia 32" KDL-32W5500U (100Hz Motionflow TV with image blur reduction technology); and, for the full-on football fantasy, the Panasonic Viera 50" TX-P50X20B (ideal for sports, gaming or movies), and the prices are correct at the time of publication. However, if you have views on better models or know where you can buy the sets we have looked at for less, please post the details below. Sony Bravia 32" Online Amazon is charging the lowest price at £399.99. High street retailers For those of you wanting to purchase the TV in time to watch the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend, Argos is selling it for £449.99 . Panasonic Viera 50" Online Amazon is offering the TV for £649 , as are Dixons and Laskys . High street retailers John Lewis comes out on top with a price of £649, which also includes a five-year guarantee. Urban spender alternative For a TV between the two sizes Comet is offering this 42" LG television screen at £399 , but via VoucherCodes.co.uk we have found the code 5199AW which, up until 1st June, reduces the price to £379.05. Cashback Kings These deals are only likely to tempt England fans, but if you think England are going to storm the World Cup you should consider Currys' cashback deal, which is offering £10 for every goal England scores if you spend £599 or more on a television . Current holders Italy scored 12 goals in 2006, which if replicated could mean a £120 cashback deal! But if you really fancy England's chances then Sainsburys is offering a Toshiba 40" TV for free if England win the World Cup, otherwise it is £399.99. Buy it this weekend (May 28-31) and receive triple Nectar points.
