Michael White's Conference Daily: Miliband calls for 'new generation' to inspire Labour
Ed Miliband told his party that a "new generation" at the top of his party would take the fight to the Conservative party. In a speech that stressed his optimism about the future, he told delegates that he would not oppose every coalition cut, nor would he support "irresponsible strikes". On the conference floor Michael White hears from party members before and after the speech including former chancellor Alistair Darling and David Miliband supporter Jim Murphy . Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland said the speech, while impressive, "didn't soar". Meanwhile Polly Toynbee argued that it was a good start. Live-blogger Andrew Sparrow was less impressed. He says that Miliband's debut effort was forgettable. Also today: we hear from cartoonist Steve Bell on how he's taken to drawing the younger Miliband . And the Mail on Sunday's Peter Hitchens on why the new generation of political leaders have "no distinguishing marks".
