This week's new DVD and Blu-ray

A Prophet DVD, Optimum Home Entertainment You can never really call time on a movie genre. Westerns, musicals and, in this instance, prison movies have all been written off over the years, yet all come back into view when someone tackles the conventions, explores the possibilities and uses the well-worn tropes to create something new. Director/writer Jacques Audiard is one for taking care over his work: his filmography has regular four- to five-year gaps between releases. With faultless performances on both sides of the camera, we follow young French/Arab petty crook Malik (Tahar Rahim) as he enters a six-year stretch. The outside world has taught him little, the constant threat of death provides the impetus he needs to learn, fast. This is not one of those nice movie prisons: here you're sure to be shanked with no redemption. While it's Malik's (true life) story that's central, it's the resident Corsican crime boss César (Niels Arestrup) who casts the longest shadow. The film explores the complex dynamic between the two men touching on social standing, race, hatred, fear and power. The DVD covers the story behind the production showing how nearly all of the prison extras were ex-cons. Alongside the deleted scenes there's a short feature on the director organising a screening of the movie for street kids and people from both sides of the law – probably the toughest focus group in the world; they all come out singing the film's praises. A Single Man Colin Firth and Julianne Moore star in fashion designer Tom Ford's immaculate film debut set in 1960s LA.
