Offer now expired: See the best of two galleries with a 2 for 1 discount at Abbot Hall, Kendal
This autumn, two of England's finest small galleries, Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal, and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham, have done a temporary 'exchange'. The Barber Institute has sent 30 of its superb works on paper to Kendal while 40 watercolours and drawings from Abbot Hall will make the trip south to Birmingham. At Abbot Hall , The Barber Goes North: Treasures from The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, exhibition includes a selection of old master drawings, including exceptional works by Rubens, Tintoretto and Beardsley. This exhibition will give regular visitors the chance to see masterpieces from some of the most celebrated western artists in history. Upstairs, iconic German Expressionist prints by celebrated artists such as Emil Nolde, Max Beckmann, Kathe Köllwitz and Egon Schiele, from the Barber's wonderful collection of modern works on paper, will show how powerful, emotional and direct art could be at the beginning of the twentieth century. The extraordinary Thomas Bewick: Tale-Pieces, the first exhibition to be devoted entirely to the vignettes of British wood engraver Thomas Bewick, has been receiving rave reviews as it tours Englands most popular galleries. With the aid of magnifying glasses supplied by the gallery you can see Bewicks world of morality and comment on human nature in images little larger than a thumb-print. Born in Cherryburn, near Mickley, Northumberland in 1753, Bewick worked in Newcastle until his death in 1828. Clearly infuenced by his childhood on a small farm on the banks of the river Tyne, Bewick's love of the countryside is reflected in his detailed woodcuts of animals, birds and rural scenes. Amongst his most ambitious projects were illustrations for General History of Quadrupeds (1790) and History of British Birds (two volumes, 1797 and 1804), both of which also included a great number of vignettes. The Abbot Hall in Kendal is offering Extra members a 2 for 1 deal on tickets to each exhibition, saving you £5.75. You can Gift Aid it for £6.35. The offer is valid until Friday 17 December 2010.
