Ben Nevis hiker found dead
The body of a holidaymaker who disappeared after climbing Ben Nevis in jeans and a light jacket has been found, nearly a week after he went missing. The police said the body of Haider Ali Manir, 20, from Worcester, was discovered on Britain's highest peak yesterday afternoon. Manir was last seen by his cousin at 6pm last Sunday about 1,000 metres up the mountain, after he insisted on continuing despite the failing light and bitter conditions. Two days of searches by mountain rescue teams, search dogs and a Royal Navy helicopter last week failed to find his body. Their first search was called off last Tuesday because of severe gales, blizzards and sub-zero temperatures. It resumed on Friday. Northern constabulary said this morning that members of eight mountain rescue teams, including climbers from RAF Valley in Wales, were involved in the searches. Rescuers were critical of Manir's decision to attempt the climb without proper clothing and equipment. His family said he was a keen hill walker. The police said: "Searches were carried out over a period of five days and during this time rescue teams had to endure extremely poor weather conditions and reduced visibility, making it difficult for searchers to operate on the hill."
