US Open 2011: Congressional – Geoff Ogilvy's guide to the key holes

Hole 7 Par 3 Yards 173 " A short par-three by US Open standards, maybe an eight-iron if the pin is at the front of the green and a six-iron if it's at the back. It's a birdie hole. Like a lot of the holes on this course there is really short grass at the front of the green. If you spin it off the front, it is going to go 30 yards off the green. Then you have got a chip-and-run and we guys don't like them because we don't do them any more" Hole 16 Par 5 Yards 579 " A very reachable par-five. In the practice round I hit a five-wood for my second shot; the really big hitters will be hitting a five-iron. Going for the green is a risk, though, because the grass from halfway up on the right-hand side of the green all the way round the back is shaved down. On the right, they have brought pine needles in and raked them so it is fluffy. If you miss the green on the right you will end up in that stuff – a very difficult chip. Unless you really have to or if you can hit a five-iron or less, I would say you don't go for the green. The penalty is too severe, plus you are giving up the opportunity to have an easy shot in from 80 yards with your third" Hole 18 Par 4 Yards 523 " A pretty cool hole, even though it is really long. You have to hit a driver – a normal, solid, hard US Open drive. In the practice round I was left with 220 yards to the pin for my second, though it plays shorter than that downhill. I got there with a five-iron. If the tee stays back and the wind gets up and into your face, I bet most of the field would choose to lay up with their second. It is a great looking second shot, from the top of the hill looking down on the green with the biggest clubhouse in golf sitting behind it. But it will be different in the tournament. Guys' heart rates will be up on that shot because it is pretty scary looking. Plenty of guys will hit it in the water on the left and there will be plenty of bailing out on the right"
