Bank on Byword to start to make a name for himself at Royal Ascot
3.50 Prince of Wales's Stakes Maxime Guyon, the 21-year-old rising star of the French racing scene, can taste success on his first trip to Royal Ascot aboard Byword . The selection looked as if he might have had his limitations exposed when twice being beaten in Group races at the end of last season, but trainer Andre Fabre suspected that there may be more improvement to come from this colt with another season on his back and so it has proved. Victories at Maisons-Laffite and Saint-Cloud were built upon when Byword gave Goldikova a decent scrap in the Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp last month, the pair pulling 10 lengths clear. Goldikova's gutsy win in yesterday's Queen Anne Stakes has clearly done that form no harm. Presvis has been chasing the world's biggest prizes recently, with just one of his last dozen starts coming in Britain. He deserves a better rub of the green than he has been receiving of late and won't be disgraced. 2.30 Jersey Stakes A disappointing renewal, in which Meezaan is entitled to considerable respect. He travelled nicely and looked to have every chance turning for home when fifth in the French 2,000 Guineas, but faded and may be happier back at seven furlongs. Shakespearean could prove his biggest threat. Frankie Dettori was left waxing lyrical after he had made all at Epsom on Oaks Day, his first start under the Godolphin banner. However he has to give 3lb away to most of these rivals and that could prove just too much. 3.05 Windsor Forest Stakes Spacious looks to have much more on her plate in this contest than when successful here 12 months ago and is one of the first to be crossed off the list. Strawberrydaiquiri came unstuck against Sahpresa in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket last year, but may have improved since and is entitled to respect despite having still to show that she is up to this level. However, at the prices a chance is taken on the 14-1 shot Pyrrha , who is perfectly entitled to take her chance at this level and who has prospects as good as the much shorter-priced Antara on her running against Reggane. 4.25 Royal Hunt Cup Lovelace was first home of the eight runners who stayed on the far side in last year's race off a 5lb higher mark, but might just have slipped under the radar this year despite a recent revival in form since a switch of stable. Victories over Dream Light and Mia's Boy in a conditions race will have helped to build him back up and his latest defeat can easily be attributed to the soft ground. An end-to-end gallop on a good surface brings out the best in him. Provided his high draw doesn't once again prove a disadvantage, he will surely run better than his dismissive odds of 25-1 suggest. Dandy Boy has not been overburdened by the handicapper for his Victoria Cup success. Forgotten Voice may also run well in first-time headgear, despite top weight. 5.00 Queen Mary Stakes John Gosden accused Maqaasid of having been "a bit dreamy" when taking a while to get going on her debut at Sandown last month. However, the vibes have been positive about this filly for a while now and she showed plenty once reaching top gear. That run is sure to have brought her on. Purple Glow pulled too hard for her own good last time but her earlier form with Samuel Morse in the Marble Hill Stakes has worked out quite well and she should figure. 5.35 Sandringham Handicap Safina has still to live up to her illustrious pedigree, being the second foal of the brilliant miler Russian Rhythm, but there was plenty to like about her maiden-race victory at Chester last month. Even though the handicapper seems to have been harsh enough in allotting her a mark of 96, she might have been even higher but for an unlucky run when fourth in the Nell Gwyn Stakes on her previous start.
