Will Pamela Stephenson Connolly triumph on Strictly?
I'll say this for Pamela Stephenson Connolly; she has the best job title ever used on any series of Strictly Come Dancing. Hearing Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly announce her as "funnygirl and psychologist" every week is going to be brilliant. Of course, the longevity of that little amusement depends on how long she stays in the competition. And first impressions are promising. Leaving aside the rather clunky Highland fling she danced with husband Billy Connolly in her introductory video (clad in traditional tartan, of course) and her ironic shimmy up the red carpet in the pre-show spiel, she looked confident and graceful leading the ladies in the middle of the group dance to I'm Coming Up, lifting her legs well and even managing to make her smile look convincing. And her partnership with resident fiery bad boy James Jordan should be interesting. She demanded a dancer with a sense of humour; Jordan isn't exactly laugh-a-minute (more like insult-a-minute), but nevertheless, they seem to get on well, with Stephenson leaping at him and wrapping her legs around him when their partnership was announced. She did then remember herself and mutter, "My husband is in the audience," so perhaps Connolly's presence may inhibit her from throwing herself into the sexier Latin routines, particularly as she has already said he is not overly happy about her flashing the flesh. One other observation: yes, it's good to avoid appearing too confident, otherwise you'll get the internet crazies denouncing you as arrogant. But self-deprecating comments such as "I hope he doesn't think he's drawn the short straw" could also wear a teeny bit thin after a while. So relax, Pamela (do I sound like a therapist?), there are plenty of shorter straws than you in this year's lineup.
