When in ... Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia

Anada: A fantastic restaurant which is always packed, serving authentic tapas dishes from southern Spain (chef Jesse Gerner spent time at Moro, hence his passion for North African herbs and spices). A great list of sherries and Spanish wines, too. • 197 Gertrude Street (+613 9415 6101; anada.com.au ) Photograph: Mark Roper Dr Follicles: This barber shop is a Melbourne icon. It has a great retro fitout and the owners play classic tunes on vinyl. Until recently the price of a haircut included a Coopers stubby of beer. Tighter licensing laws mean you now get free dim sum instead. • 240 Gertrude Street (+613 9416 3999) Photograph: Mark Roper Max Watts: A mecca of industrial chic, combining refashioned commercial furniture and fittings with original pieces from its own workshop, as well as vintage clothing and jewellery. The doctor’s cabinets are a particular retro joy. • Industria, 202 Gertrude Street ( industriax.com.au ) Photograph: Mark Roper Spacecraft: Spacecraft is a studio founded by Scottish artist Stewart Russell, previously the director at London’s Printworks gallery. His vibrant screen prints are available on linen, fashion and furniture. • 225 Gertrude Street (+613 9486 0010; spacecraftaustralia.com ) Photograph: Mark Roper Title: This record shop is a great place to browse for the unusual and the niche in music, DVDs, books and clothes. Title excels at specialist film reissues on DVD and rare vinyl, and prides itself on its collection of rare jazz and classical music. • 183 Gertrude Street (+613 9417 4477; titlespace.com ) Photograph: Mark Roper Map of the area Photograph: Graphic
