Championship Verdict: The Observer fans' network on Saturday's matches
Barnsley 1-1 Derby County Was it a good match? We started slowly, I don't think our 4-4-2 formation coped with their five across midfield. Yet again we were undone by a corner – goalkeeper Luke Steele looked to have been impeded, the defence fell asleep. We started to get back into the game after that, had the lions' share of chances and were unfortunate to go in at the break 1-0 down. We played with more urgency in the second period and moved the ball around quite nicely before Adam Hammill latched on to an error, ran with the ball and rammed it into the top corner. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Jacob Butterfield sprayed the ball around. Paul Gallagher, BarnsleyFC.org.uk Bristol City 1-2 Coventry City Was it a good match? It was an improvement on Tuesday's performance – we were more committed and created a few more chances but lacked creativity in midfield and an attacking threat up front, mainly due to Nicky Maynard's absence. Defensively, we're still weak and their second goal came from a routine set play we failed to deal with. Some sections of the crowd thought their first was offside. Coventry were very organised, came with a game plan and executed it to good effect. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Marvin Elliott was MOTM. Jon Stead worked hard. Rich Brown, OTIB.co.uk Crystal Palace 0-0 Burnley Was it a good match? It was actually a very good game. Both teams created chances. Burnley missed a couple of sitters and Julian Speroni kept us in it at the end of the first half and beginning of the second with some fine saves. The key moment for us came when Wilfried Zaha missed a one-on-one with Brian Jensen. I was impressed with Burnley who were strong at the back and quite skilful in midfield. That's our first clean sheet in six months. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Right-back Alex Marrow did well when moved to central midfield. Claude Davis had a solid game. Chris Eagles was their stand-out player. Chris Waters, Cpstrust.org.uk Hull City 0-0 Nottingham Forest Was it a good match? City started well and Jimmy Bullard forced a terrific save from Lee Camp. We looked confident after Tuesday's result and felt we just shaded it up until half time, but Forest contrived to keep the ball for most of the second period. Our midfield is great in possession but bad without it. While Forest never looked like scoring they won numerous corners. City weren't in the game until the final ten minutes but the game played out for a draw. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Daniel Ayala was excellent – I hope that we can make his loan move from Liverpool permanent. Rick Skelton, HullCityOnline.com Ipswich Town 2-0 Cardiff City Was it a good match? In the first half Cardiff came at us, playing dangerous but not deadly. They had a lot of trouble with the offside and we broke a lot of their attacks down. In the second half we controlled the game and our midfield managed to build and then take the game to Cardiff. It was inspiring the way the team responded so well after the disappointment against QPR. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Carlos Edwards turned the game with his attacks down the right wing. They played everything through Jay Bothroyd, who was a physical presence but couldn't deal with the offside. Declan Hill, Observer reader Leicester City 0-2 Queens Park Rangers Was it a good match? A comfortable win for a very streetwise QPR over a limited Leicester side. Once Rangers had taken the lead the match was virtually over. City huffed and puffed but never threatened in spite of 20 attempts on goal. Leicester's lack of physical challenge, pace and aerial power were all exposed against the division's top side. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Matty Fryatt cut a forlorn figure as City's lone striker and Martyn Waghorn probably had his worst game for us. QPR had no obvious weaknesses. Eddie Blount, Observer reader Middlesbrough 3-1 Reading Was it a good match? We were really positive for the first time in ages and scored after 22 seconds. Reading came to play football which made for a good game. The ref did his bit to help the contest flow – even though he got a bit picky in the second half. The crowd urged Tarmo Kink to shoot at will after scoring a brace against Burnley midweek but while he obliged his efforts got further and further away from goal. Who played well/who had a nightmare? French midfielder Mickael Tavares kept the ball moving. It was good to see David Wheater score on his return from injury. Elle Brunton, Observer reader Millwall 1-6 Watford Was it a good match? An atrocious defensive performance. We're used to getting into the home games at our own pace but we were shell-shocked after conceding an early goal. Our response wasn't good enough. We just started hoofing the ball up the pitch, and it was so obvious that we panicking; we had no composure or organisation. After conceding the second our defence fell apart. There was no point in the game when we felt safe. Who played well/who had a nightmare? The whole team had a nightmare, but Steve Morison and Scott Barron were probably our weakest players. Charlie Mahoney, Observer reader Preston North End 0-1 Norwich City Was it a good match? A sixth defeat in seven games for Preston who quite frankly offered little to trouble the visitors. One shot off target was about the sum of North End's efforts and it was only a matter of time before Norwich broke through to score the goal that won them the game. The home side had plenty of effort but little in terms of match-winning skill, and when Grant Holt scored, midway through the second half, there was no way back for a poor North End side. Who played well/who had a nightmare? The senior players were most culpable as the youngsters tried their hardest to forge a way forward. John Roper, PSG.me.uk Sheffield United 1-0 Portsmouth Was it a good match? Of course I'm delighted with the points, but, to be honest, we were as bad as each other – a draw would have been fairer. In fact, we probably played better against Scunthorpe on Tuesday night when we got battered 4-0. But winning and not necessarily playing well is always a good sign - how will it be when the strikers eventually get their striking boots on? Who played well/who had a nightmare? Ched Evans took his free-kick well. Portsmouth's problem is goals: on paper they have quality throughout the side, but they just can't put the ball in the onion bag. You don't score goals, you don't win games. Jamie Furniss, Blades-Mad.co.uk Swansea City 2-0 Scunthorpe United Was it a good match? I think we dominated possession so Scunthorpe did well to put us under pressure and force the issue when they could. The Swans pushed forward more after the break and broke their stubborn defence twice in as many minutes as the clock counted down. Our home form is superb but need to improve our away record to push up the table . Who played well/who had a nightmare? Frank Nouble is on loan from West Ham and made a promising start. He could have scored. The MOTM award was given to Alan Tate, who was solid in defence and good going forward. Kevin Elphick, Swansea.VitalFootball.co.uk
