Ronnie Wood announces solo album

Ronnie Wood has announced his first solo album in almost a decade, roping in Slash, Flea and the Faces' Ian McLagan – but not a single fellow Rolling Stone. I Feel Like Playing, Wood's follow-up to 2001's Not For Beginners, will be released by rock'n'roll indie Eagle Records on 27 September. Wood, 63, has been releasing solo records since before joining the Stones. For his seventh outing, he collaborated with musicians including Kris Kristofferson, ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, and even soulman Bobby Womack. In an interview last year, Wood also described working with Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. It's not clear whether that song made the cut. While the Stones seem to be on hiatus, with only intermittent talk of a new album and persistent break-up rumours, Wood has been extremely busy. He's playing gigs with the reunited Faces , who hope to tour with Mick Hucknall next year. He's become an earnest radio host , with a programme every week. He's doing a lot of painting, mounting his first American art show in Ohio next month. And he's newly sober, quitting drugs and drink over the past year. Some of this he credits to Ana Araujo, the 30-year-old polo coach he has been seeing since the beginning of the year. "She is very inspiring to paint," he said earlier this month. "I'm getting really prolific, turning out two paintings a week ... Music helps me paint and painting helps me with music." The canvases vary from cartoons – "spoofs of English culture," according to his US gallerist – to "winged horses and landscapes". One of these paintings, a graffiti-sloppy abstract , inspired the new album, lending the record its title and cover artwork. I Feel Like Playing consists of 12 originals, including a track called Fancy Pants. The first single, Thing About You, is a plodding mid-tempo rocker, buoyed by back-up vocals and Wood's admittedly righteous electric guitar. It is streaming now at Wood's website .
