Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind DVD & Blu-Ray, Optimum In the west we only really discovered animation master Hayao Miyazaki well into his career when 2001's Spirited Away was chaperoned into cinemas by Pixar's helpful John Lasseter. If anything, playing catch up with his work means there's a wealth of previous works waiting to be uncovered by newer converts. While it proudly bears the Studio Ghibli banner, this stunning 1984 classic was actually produced before the studio's creation; the team went on to form the famed imprint shortly after this hit big at the Japanese box office. Miyazaki had directed before, but he'd been adapting the work of other writers or writing and drawing for other directors. Here he had to first create this ecologically minded, science fiction fantasy tale as a comic book to generate enough interest to get the film version off the ground. Set in a feudal, agricultural future Earth where the wars of the past have left the land mostly toxic and full of mutated, large insects, we follow plucky Princess Nausicaä on a mission to save her peaceful village from destruction. As Miyazaki has always championed old-school, hand-drawn animation this still feels contemporary, a feeling accentuated on the optional English-language track with the familiar voices of Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart and Edward James Olmos.
