Going, going, gone for a pound
Long gone are the days when you could buy fish and chips for a quid. But there are still £1 bargains to be had among some famous British institutions. The Independent and the London Evening Standard were bought by ex-KGB agent Alexander Lebedev for £1 each. Lloyds Bank sold its Halifax Estate Agents chain for £1, and now STV has flogged Pearl & Dean , the cinema advertising business, for £1. Sadly, there were no takers for Woolworths, even at £1, and it had to close. Assuming that Cif is not for sale, what would you like to snap up in the corporate pound shop?
