Jim Allenby and James Harris rescue Glamorgan from Derbyshire pressure

Glamorgan's bid for promotion was blighted by familiar batting problems against the bottom club Derbyshire . The Welsh county collapsed to 66 for six after opting to bat first in overcast conditions but Jim Allenby and James Harris launched a partial recovery before rain ended play three hours early. While the Derbyshire opening bowlers, Tim Groenewald and Jonathan Clare, extracted some movement, Glamorgan were largely the agents of their own misfortune as six wickets fell for 35 in 16 overs following an opening stand of 31 between Mark Cosgrove and Gareth Rees. Only Jamie Dalrymple could point to the pitch for his dismissal, edging a delivery from Clare that bounced and moved away. Rees, Ben Wright and Mark Cosgrove produced shots more worthy of a one-day thrash while Tom Maynard and Mark Wallace misjudged the line. Allenby and Harris took the score to 120 for six, not without alarms, before rain, which had forced two previous interruptions, settled in for the day. Kevin Pietersen of Surrey had to battle against showers and bad light against Gloucestershire in Bristol. Only 27 overs were possible in four sessions, but Pietersen managed to end up unbeaten on 40 in a Surrey total of 112 for three. With Rory Hamilton-Brown he had added 67 for the fourth wicket.
