Absolute Radio settles trademark fight with Absolut vodka

Absolute Radio has settled its legal action with Swedish vodka brand Absolut, which sued the national music station claiming infringement of its trademark. Today's settlement, the terms of which are confidential, marks the end of 18 months of legal action. Absolut, which is owned by the drinks company V&S Vin&Sprit, launched high court proceedings for trademark infringement and "passing off" – misrepresenting services as those of Absolut. "Absolute Radio is pleased with this settlement which will see us continue to build our music radio brand and advance our position as one of the leading commercial radio networks in a digital age," said Absolute Radio chief operating officer Clive Dickens. Paula Eriksson, spokesperson for V&S, said: "I am pleased with the outcome of this matter which will enable us to continue to develop the iconic Absolut brand without risk of confusion to the public." Absolute Radio was previously known as Virgin Radio, relaunching in 2008 after its purchase by the Times of India Group. Absolut issued a writ for infringement of its trademark soon after , claiming there was a risk of confusion between the two brands.
