Ten of the best ... free things to do with the kids this month

1. Let your hair down in Coventry The Godiva Festival is a free and ticketless family festival from 2-4 July in Coventry's War Memorial Park. There is a big lineup of comedy acts, acoustic artists and folk performances, as well as the Godiva Carnival Procession with colourful and exotic masquerade costumes. 2. Hats off to Winchester At Winchester's hat fair , 2-4 July, entertainers perform in exchange for money thrown into their hats. View interactive installations, walkabout acts and shows around the town in Britain's longest-running festival of street theatre and outdoor arts. 3. Grab a Less Ordinary slice of culture The Art Council England is offering free theatre tickets through its A Night Less than Ordinary scheme for those aged 26 or under in large and small venues around the country including the National Theatre, Liverpool Everyman, Northern Stage, Birmingham Rep and Leicester Curve. Enter your postcode to find your nearest theatre. 4. Play fair in Oxfordshire Cornbury Festival , near Charlbury, Oxfordshire on 3 and 4 July is free for children aged 12 and under. Day tickets for children aged 13-16 cost £27.50, while adults cost £55. This summer festival in the guise of a country fair is designed for the whole family and includes a fairground, an open kids area and roaming entertainers. The music lineup includes David Gray, Squeeze, Newton Faulkner, The Feeling, Seth Lakeman and Jackson Browne. 5. Experiment with art in Manchester Manchester Art Gallery's interactive laboratory sessions for children on 3 July is a free drop-in session with creative hands-on activities suitable for children of any age. 6. Take a flutter on Bellamy Love butterflies? Hear David Bellamy talk about the Butterfly World project, which is based at the world's biggest butterfly experience in St Albans, at London's National Geographic Store on 4 July at 1pm. Bellamy will be accompanied by the Butterfly World team and a whole load of caterpillars, chrysalids and butterflies. 7. Watch kites in Brighton See some of the world's best sport kite flyers at Brighton's Kite Festival on 10-11 July. With food stalls, a free children's kite workshop and beautifully made single-line kites of all shapes and sizes.. 8. Listen to the world in Hyde Park Enjoy an entire weekend of free live concerts from all over the globe at the Music Village in Hyde Park on 10 and 11 July. Sample sounds from the Congo, Ghana, south India, the Balkans, Greece, Anatolia, Argentina, Morocco, Colombia and Algeria as the climax of a fortnight of free cultural exchange. 9. Be crafty in north London For those children who love to get messy and creative, Crafty Kids is a free craft session in Queen's Crescent Library in Camden, north London. The next one is at 4pm on 7 July but the sessions run throughout the summer. 10. Make a noise at the Proms BBC Proms Plus from 16 July to 11 September has a host of free events on offer for families. Sign up in advance to the Proms Family Orchestra events aimed at children aged seven-plus and families which take place on Saturday 31 July and Sunday 15 August at the Royal College of Music.
