Dick Sudhalter: Legacy 1967-2001

Sudhalter was a true renaissance man - foreign correspondent, critic, biographer and master of cornet in the Bix Beiderbecke tradition. He died in 2008, but fortunately left a pile of good and very varied recordings. Notable among those here are his recreation of the vast Paul Whiteman Orchestra of the 1920s, and a surprisingly powerful 1967 performance with the veteran singer Eva Taylor. Sudhalter's meticulous yet passionate approach to reviving old jazz styles was as effective as similar efforts by Wynton Marsalis – and he did it all on a shoestring.
