Marry Waterson and Oliver Knight: The Days That Shaped Me – review

As scions of folk's Waterson clan, it's taken this sister and brother a long time to do the obvious and record together. The result is a lovely, low-key affair that pays tribute to their late mother Lal, whether in songs such as "Rosy" or in the freedom and poeticism of Waterson's writing, which echoes Lal's quixotic style. Knight's arrangements are unfussy, mostly guitar with expeditions into chamber strings. James Yorkston, Kathryn Williams and cousin Eliza Carthy contribute, and the evocations of childhood days slip engagingly between the austere and the magical.
