Sleeve Notes: To Libertine, or not to Libertine
You love the Libertines, you hate the Libertines This week saw two music journalism heavyweights go blow for blow over one band: the Libertines. This is, of course, a ridiculous notion when you consider that the boxers in question were the relatively mild-mannered Tim Jonze and Graeme Thomson, and the blows were delivered by way of the pen. But the reaction was dramatic enough that visualising both men belting each other in the ring seems more apt. So here's the 411 (are people still using that phrase this side of the 90s?): Jonze wrote a nostalgic piece looking at the early-noughties band through the eyes of their fans, while Thompson was dismayed by the praise for their bad music . The reaction from readers was inevitable: "WHY does the Guardian continue to give this band coverage!?" And the winner? Jonze, obvs. No, Thompson! Wait, it was Jonze. Oh, who knows. There'll have to be a rematch next week when they both put their cases for and against Lily Allen's unborn child being offered a record contract, that's sure to generate some calm and considered comments. Five things we learned this week: There's not as much distance between Thames Valley Uni and LA as you'd think That there's unlikely to be a credible talent contest on TV That a blog about Insane Clown Posse is more popular than you'd think Why your favourite bands should split up That Kanye, Raekwon and Justin Bieber are collaborating. On a song. Together. The doctor will see you now This week saw the continuation of the increasingly popular Ask the Indie Professor column , with Dr Wendy Fonarow answering such questions as: "Why do so many people on Guardian music blogs think they're being erudite and witty by having a knee-jerk negative reaction to anything "alternative" that is also popular?" (yes, we like Johnny5eyes). If you have a burning question about the world of music, head over to the waiting room and lodge your query.
