Rangers manager Walter Smith slams SFA's 'flawed' disciplinary system
Walter Smith has hit out at the Scottish Football Association's "flawed" disciplinary system ahead of Motherwell's visit to Ibrox tomorrow, when his Rangers team will be without their first-choice goalkeeper, Allan McGregor. McGregor has been retrospectively banned for one match for attempting to kick Aberdeen's Chris Maguire last month, an incident which was not spotted by the referee on the day. Smith believes that because of their TV exposure, the Old Firm are more likely to have players suspended for such offences than any other Scottish Premier League side. "It is a flawed process," Smith said. "Ourselves and Celtic are on [TV] every week. It's flawed because it means for the other clubs it is down to whoever edits the stuff that appears on the television. Unless every game is shown on television, it is rather unfair and that is something that has been flagged up to the SFA for a long time. It's not a new thing but I don't think the SFA have adjusted to it. Allan McGregor's case might highlight this but that process has been flawed since it started and that is not just my opinion. Everybody thinks it is a flawed area – there are glaring discrepancies in it that everybody is just inclined to ignore. McGregor's was an innocuous foul anyway." Stewart Regan, the SFA chief executive, has responded to Smith's complaints by saying: "The investigation process is designed to ensure violent conduct is eradicated from the game." Rangers face a challenging spell, with Valencia visiting Ibrox in the Champions League on Wednesday and the season's first Old Firm game due a week on Sunday. Lee McCulloch will be absent for at least a fortnight with a hip problem while Nikica Jelavic faces a minimum of two months on the sidelines. "It is a huge blow to us," Smith said of the player who arrived during August in a £4m deal from Rapid Vienna. "Not even taking into account we don't have a big squad of players, we were hoping he'd do well. He was just beginning to settle in, so we're disappointed he's going to be out for that length of time." Dundee's management team of Gordon Chisholm and Billy Dodds, plus nine first-team players, have been made redundant with confirmation that the club is in administration . Liquidation has not been ruled out for the Division One club, amid a desperate race to find a buyer to secure its long-term future. "We must get money in the door before Christmas," the administrator, Bryan Jackson, said. "That is the deadline we have set as of now. I cannot stress enough how short a period we have before the money runs out."
