David Moyes demands physicality after Everton's worst start since 1994

Having experienced Everton's worst start to a season under his management, David Moyes has called for more physical and less pretty football. Fulham, who entertain them tomorrow, have been warned. Two points from their opening five matches represents Everton's worst beginning to a campaign since 1994, when they were salvaged by Joe Royle under an approach labelled The Dogs of War. Although Royle disliked the term, it is a strategy that would meet with Moyes's approval, if only temporarily. "We need to rediscover our toughness and maybe we will have to sacrifice a little of the playing style to get better results," he said. "You would always find it hard to out-fight Everton but that happened against Newcastle last Saturday. "I told the players I have been disappointed by the physical side of their game, especially against Newcastle. I don't think we have competed as well as we can." He said defeats by Newcastle and at Brentford in the Carling Cup were not a consequence of the euphoria generated by scoring twice in stoppage time to draw with Manchester United. "It wasn't euphoric for us to draw 3-3 against Manchester United because we had beaten them the season before," he said. "If the players were euphoric, they didn't get it from their manager."
