The X Factor draws 13.646 million
ITV1's unlikely pairing of Simon Cowell and Dame Maggie Smith continued to help the channel dominate the Sunday ratings battle last night, 24 October. The latest instalment of The X Factor, which saw John Adeleye voted off the show , averaged 13.646 million viewers, a 47.7% share of the audience across ITV1 and the ITV HD channel between 8pm and 9pm. ITV1 HD's share of this audience was 808,000. The X Factor was up last week's 13.414 million viewers. Period drama Downton Abbey, which followed The X Factor from 9pm, had an average audience of 8.783 million, a 33% share on ITV1 and ITV1 HD, virtually on a par with the previous week's 8.791 million. ITV1 HD's share of the Downton Abbey audience last night was 361,000. The X Factor predictably eclipsed BBC1's Antiques Roadshow, which had 5.642 million viewers, a 19.7% share, between 8pm and 9pm. A further 263,000 (0.9%) watched on BBC HD. Downton Abbey had the better of BBC1's David Tennant drama Single Father, which drew 3.878 million viewers, a 14.5% share. The BBC HD simulcast added a further 194,000 (0.7%). The other main channels also felt the squeeze, with BBC2 documentary Attenborough's Journey, about Sir David Attenborough's career and his new BBC series First Life, had 1.728 million viewers, 6% of the audience, between 8pm and 9pm. Over on Channel 4, the second of a new series of The Secret Millionaire gave the network its biggest audience of the night, with 1.982 million viewers, 7.2% of the audience, between 9pm and 10pm. Another 249,000 viewers watched on Channel 4 +1. Earlier, Channel 5's terrestrial premiere of Hollywood animation Surf's Up, starring the voices of Shia LaBeouf and Jeff Bridges, averaged 1.579 million viewers, a 7.6% share, between 5.35pm and 7.15pm.
